About this piece
What it shows
One of the earliest images Christians made of Christ, painted on the walls of the catacombs long before the crucifix. Here he stands in a long mantle with his staff raised, watching over his flock.
How it is made
Upright figures like this are carved from the heart of a thick branch, where the wood is densest. The face is finished with small knives and the robe left with crisp, deep folds. The base bears a plate reading “The Good Shepherd”.
