About this piece
What it shows
Michael, captain of the heavenly host, is shown in the traditional pose of victory over the dragon, the old enemy, his spear angled down to the rock beneath him. He is the protector of pilgrims and the guardian of Bethlehem, and the saint whose name we carry.
How it is made
The wings are the test of a carver. Each feather is cut separately and thinned until light shows at the edges, and the outstretched span leaves very little wood to work with. The figure stands on a rocky base with an engraved plate reading “St. Michael”.
