About this piece
What it shows
The Holy Family in a moment of stillness: husband and wife side by side, their son in front of them with his arms open. The composition is upright and calm, made for a mantel, a chapel niche or the centre of a home.
How it is made
The three figures are carved as one group and set on a round, darkened base with an engraved plate. Look at the long folds of Mary's mantle, where the carver has let the pale and dark bands of the olive wood run the whole height of the figure.
